Lymphedema is categorized into two types, primary and secondary. Secondary lymphedema is more common and typically is a result of surgery, radiation therapy, cancer, burns, or trauma.
Treatment of lymphedema usually involves Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). MLD uses specific gentle massage techniques that follow lymph pathways. It facilitates the movement of fluid within the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is made up of lymph fluid, lymph vessels, and lymph nodes that are responsible for returning excess fluid and proteins not reabsorbed by veins from the tissues to the circulation.
Symptoms of Lymphedema may include:
Increased girth of one limb compared to the other
Discomfort/pain in the affected limb
Feeling of fullness and heaviness in the limb
Tight-feeling skin
Tightness, tenderness, or pain in the joints
Decreased flexibility/weakness
Pins and needles
Difficulty fitting into clothes
Fatigue
Ring, bracelet, wristwatch, shoe, or sock tightness
