Lymphedema

Lymphedema is categorized into two types, primary and secondary. Secondary lymphedema is more common and typically is a result of surgery, radiation therapy, cancer, burns, or trauma.

Treatment of lymphedema usually involves Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). MLD uses specific gentle massage techniques that follow lymph pathways. It facilitates the movement of fluid within the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is made up of lymph fluid, lymph vessels, and lymph nodes that are responsible for returning excess fluid and proteins not reabsorbed by veins from the tissues to the circulation.

Symptoms of Lymphedema may include:

  • Increased girth of one limb compared to the other
  • Discomfort/pain in the affected limb
  • Feeling of fullness and heaviness in the limb
  • Tight-feeling skin
  • Tightness, tenderness, or pain in the joints
  • Decreased flexibility/weakness
  • Pins and needles
  • Difficulty fitting into clothes
  • Fatigue
  • Ring, bracelet, wristwatch, shoe, or sock tightness
  • Breast pain
  • Groin tenderness
  • Leaking of fluid from the skin

Benefits of MLD for Lymphedema may include:

  • Reduce pain and muscle spasms
  • Increase range of motion of joints
  • Decrease swelling/edema
  • Activate fluid circulation
  • Drain toxins, macromolecules, fat
  • Stimulate the immune and parasympathetic system

MLD is also a treatment option for:

  • Headaches/migraines
  • Constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis
  • Infertility
  • Pelvic congestion
  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • Swollen legs from varicose vein
  • Lumbosacral neuropathy
  • Rectal discomfort
  • Urinary Frequency
  • Menstruation – PMS, pelvic pain, breast pain
  • Blocked lactation ducts
