Nerve Mobilization

Nerve mobilization or neural mobilization is a type of physical therapy treatment manual technique to improve mobility of the nerve. It involves moving, pulling or vibrating nerve tissue to improve nerve function. Often the tissue mobility around the nerve is also targeted to allow freedom of nerve movement within it’s sheath.

Neural mobilization is used in pelvic floor physical therapy to:

  • Reduce nerve symptoms
  • Numbness
  • Pins and Needles
  • Weakness
  • Shooting Pain
  • Improve mobility of nerve and limb
  • Improve patients sensory awareness

Tips for Nerve Mobilization

  • Nerve mobilization exercises are specific. Use a mirror to make sure you are performing them correctly.
  • Ice after exercises or treatment to calm down the nervous system.
  • Gentle stretching and manual therapy of neighboring tight muscles
  • Relaxation techniques
  • For visceral mobilization, begin a food diary to identify food triggers that may flare up symptoms or cause inflammation.
