Pronouns
Why do pronouns matter? People frequently tend to refer to us by using pronouns when speaking about or to someone. Pronouns are basically how we identify ourselves apart from our name. If you really think about it, It’s how you are referred to within a conversation.
Gender is usually implied within a pronoun – but these associations are usually not accurate. The reason why making an assumption about one’s pronoun is harmful is because it sends the message that someone needs to look a certain way to demonstrate the gender that they are or are not.
Using someone’s correct pronouns is not only inclusive, but it also demonstrates sign of respect – the same way as using a person’s name is a way to respect them. There are many different ways to refer to one’s identity and the simplest thing to do is… just ask!
A simple way to use / ask about one’s pronouns could be: “Hi, my name is Alyssa. My pronouns are she/hers. What about you?”
Our world is changing quickly and it’s important to keep up to date with the changes that have been needed for some time now.
