Exercise and Gender

Exercise has been shown as one of the most proactive things to do to improve and maintain good health. It has been shown to help prevent many chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity. New research out shows that its benefits may be greater for women than men.

A study (referenced below) used data from over 400,000 adults in the U.S. which showed engaging in regular exercise significantly reduces the risk of early death and cardiovascular events more in women than men. This was despite women engaging in less intense physical activity than men.

Women Vs Men

Women who exercise on a regular basis:

  • have a 24% lower risk of mortality
  • have a 36% lower risk of cardiovascular events
  • achieve similar health benefits as men but in less time

For men these risks decreased 15% and 14% respectively.

Ultimately this underscores the importance of exercise in women. Exercise continues to be one of the most influential tools for improving longevity and cardiovascular health. Not only is it free to do but it can be done in almost any environment and tailored to suit age, health status and schedule.
