January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
Education on Prevention and Early Detection
January marks Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the critical importance of prevention, early detection, and education surrounding this disease. At the heart of this campaign is the reminder that cervical cancer treatment has a high survival rate (91%) when detected early. This number drops to 60% when cervical cancer has spread to nearby regions.
Preventative Strategies
Cervical Cancer is 100% preventable. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer, but vaccination—recommended for children ages 11 to 12—can prevent the infection. Regular screenings, such as Pap smears and HPV tests, can detect early, treatable lesions. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle by avoiding smoking and practicing safe sex also reduces risk.
Physical Therapy and Cervical Cancer Patients
Physical therapy clinics, while not typically associated with cancer care, have a vital role to play in the holistic recovery of patients diagnosed with cervical cancer. Survivors often face physical challenges, including pelvic pain, incontinence, and fatigue—issues that can profoundly affect quality of life. Specialized physical therapy can provide much-needed support by focusing on pelvic floor rehabilitation and overall strength to aid in recovery and promote well-being.
Regular Exercise Helps Improve Outcomes
Equally important is the connection between physical therapy and early intervention. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, is a proven method for reducing cancer risk and improving immune function. Patients who are proactive in managing their physical health may also experience better outcomes in terms of both prevention and treatment.
During Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, we urge everyone to schedule routine screenings, advocate for HPV vaccinations, and prioritize physical health. The fight against cervical cancer is not just about survival—it’s about thriving after diagnosis, and physical therapy plays an essential role in that journey.
