Non-Surgical Treatment For Uterine Fibroids

About 20-80% of women between the ages of 40-50 develop uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that can range in size growing inside the uterine wall. If they get larger, they can bulge into the uterine cavity or even project outside the uterus.

Many women do not have symptoms, though, if there are, they include:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic/abdominal pain
  • Urinary urgency and/or frequency
  • Constipation
  • Low back pain
  • Pain with intercourse

There is no known cause for fibroids. Research suggests that fibroid formation may be due to:

  • Increased estrogen and progesterone
  • Genetic changes
  • Increase in extracellular matrix that can cause changes in the cells
  • Stem cell from the smooth muscle of the uterus

How Can Physical Therapy Help?

Pelvic physical therapy can help women experiencing:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Bowel issues
  • Bladder issues
  • Dyspareunia/ Sexual health concerns
  • Post-op (after surgical removal)

During the initial examination, the physical therapist will perform an internal and external assessment of the pelvic floor muscles, checking for tender points or restrictions as well as test the strength of the muscles. Treatment can consist of internal vaginal pelvic floor muscle release, as well soft tissue mobilization of the abdomen, back, and hips, and relaxation techniques. Pelvic rehabilitation aims to reduce symptoms and improve bowel, bladder and sexual health.
