What is a doula?

A doula is a trained professional that provides continuous care during and after pregnancy, as well as through labor. A doula provides both emotional and physical support to make labor a more positive experience. In most scenarios, the emphasis during labor is on the physical health of the mom and baby despite labor being a significantly emotional taxing experience.

From an emotional perspective, a doula works to ensure that the mother can express her wants and needs during the labor process. The doula works to ensure significant others know how to best support their loved one, work on breathing techniques, as well as coach and position laboring moms. Doulas often apply sustained pressure at specific points throughout the body to help with pain management. They often stay during the entire duration of the labor and can allow partners time to eat or rest.

Studies have been performed testing the efficacy of doulas (Bohren et al.). By far the most resounding outcome of having a doula is having a shorter labor. It is believed that the positional changes assisted by doulas and breathing techniques create an optimal experience for this. Additionally studies have demonstrated that having a doula decreases the chance of a c-section, less reported pain post-partum, and a more positive reported outcome with labor.
