Pelvic Pain in Persons with a Penis
If there’s one thing all genders have in common is the possibility of pelvic pain, and in this blog we’re going to address pelvic pain in persons with a penis. This includes non-binary penis owners, transgender males with a penis, intersex individuals with a penis, cisgender males with a penis, and all other penis owners.
Sources of Pain
Pelvic pain in penis owners can look like some of the following:
- Penile pain with or without an erection
- Scrotal pain
- Groin pain
- Tailbone pain
- Pain in anus and rectum
- Pelvic pain with prostatitis
- Pain with ejaculation
- Pain with urination
- Pain with bowel movements
- Pain with other movements and/or positions
Other Associated Symptoms
This pelvic pain may be accompanied by:
- Sexual dysfunction
- Erectile dysfunction
- Premature ejaculation
- Urinary dysfunction
- Frequent urination
- Incomplete urination
- Urine leakage
- Bowel dysfunction
- Constipation
- Other pain- low back pain, hip pain, abdominal pain, nerve pain
Other Causes
Some possible causes to screen for if you have acute pain (pain <3 weeks):
| Urinary tract infection | Urinary stones (kidney or bladder) |
| Sexually transmitted infection | Hernias |
| Prostatic inflammation, hyperplasia | Cystitis (bladder inflammation) |
If your pelvic pain persists after these causes are screened and managed by your physician, you may benefit from seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist.
A pelvic floor physical therapist can work with you to:
- Find possible sources of pain
- Address underlying musculoskeletal dysfunctions
- Retrain bowel and bladder function
- Retrain sexual function
