Rectal Balloon Training

A balloon inside of a rectum may sound intimidating, but this is an effective evidence based testing and treatment option for bowel conditions like constipation, fecal incontinence, fecal urgency, fecal smearing, among other things. This technique has been proven to be very helpful for improving bowel function.

What is rectal balloon training?

Rectal balloon training is a form of biofeedback therapy that provides objective information on a normal physiological function – your bowel movements. A deflated balloon catheter is inserted in your rectum through your anal canal, and inflated with air very slowly to test your rectum’s sensitivity. Measurements are then recorded for when you feel pressure and fecal urge.

How is this useful?

This testing provides real time information on how sensitive your rectum is.

  • If there is low rectal sensitivity, you may not feel when there is stool in your rectum.
  • If there is high rectal sensitivity, you may have a strong fecal urge even with little to no stool in your rectum.

These values can help your PT understand the sensitivity of your rectum and how that correlates with your symptoms. This technique can then be used to improve sensitivity of your rectum to improve this physiological function.

What will it feel like?

You may feel anywhere between pressure to a fecal urge depending on how sensitive your rectum is. The purpose of this technique is to recreate the urge for a bowel movement, but know that this urge is fake. Communication is key at every step of the way, and as always, consent is of utmost importance throughout this process. If at any point, you want to discontinue, pause, ask questions, you have the right to do so!

What conditions can it help?

  • Constipation
  • Fecal incontinence
  • Fecal urgency
  • Fecal smearing
  • Bowel dysfunction following birthing injuries
  • Sphincter dysfunction
