Sexual Health Awareness Month
Prioritize Pelvic Wellness for Better Intimacy
September marks Sexual Health Awareness Month. World Sexual Health Day is Sept 4th, which makes this a great opportunity to spotlight an often-overlooked aspect of well-being: pelvic health. One of the functions of the pelvic floor is sexual wellness. The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles and connective tissues that support the bladder, uterus, and rectum.
A Brief Look at the Issues
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 43% of women aged 18-59 report some form of sexual dysfunction, which can range from pain during intercourse to decreased libido. Such issues often stem from pelvic floor dysfunction, including muscle tightness, weakness, or nerve damage.
The CDC reports that nearly one in four women experiences pelvic floor disorders—including incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse—that can further impact sexual health and quality of life. Addressing these conditions through physical therapy can significantly improve intimate relationships and overall well-being.
The First Step Starts With A Conversation
Sexual Health Awareness Month is a reminder that sexual wellness is not a luxury but a vital component of holistic health. Open conversations and professional support, including pelvic floor physical therapy, are essential steps toward breaking stigma and enhancing quality of life for all individuals.
