When Men Hurt Below the Belt

Shedding Light on Two Common Pelvic Health Conditions

Men’s health awareness often focuses on heart disease and prostate cancer, yet pelvic pain and dysfunction deserve equal attention. Two of the most under-recognized culprits are Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD) and Pudendal Neuralgia, both of which can dramatically affect quality of life, but require very different approaches to care.

Male Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction refers to a broad spectrum of issues stemming from muscles that are too tight, too weak, or uncoordinated. In men, PFD can manifest as urinary incontinence, constipation, painful intercourse, or erectile dysfunction. It’s often a silent contributor to other pelvic issues and is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed. The cause may be chronic straining, stress, or poor posture—but the outcome is physical, emotional, and deeply personal.

Pudendal Neuralgia

Pudendal Neuralgia, on the other hand, is a nerve condition. The pudendal nerve, which innervates the perineum and genitals, can become compressed or irritated, resulting in burning, tingling, or knife-like pain that often worsens with sitting. It’s not uncommon for this condition to be confused with PFD, yet the treatment pathway is more specialized and may include nerve blocks or surgical decompression.

What both conditions share is the need for increased awareness and access to pelvic health professionals. Men experiencing persistent pelvic discomfort can achieve symptom relief with treatment. These conditions require a multidisciplinary approach—including pelvic health physical therapy—can significantly improve outcomes.
