National Breastfeeding Week (Aug 1–7)
A Moment to Reflect and Support
Every August 1 through 7, National Breastfeeding Week invites families, health professionals, and policymakers to recognize the significance of nursing and breastfeeding—and the support systems that bolster successful feeding journeys.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 84.1 % of infants born in 2021 started life receiving some breast milk, yet just 59.8 % were still breastfeeding at six months, and a mere 27.2 % were exclusively breastfed for that same period. These figures highlight a familiar theme: families frequently begin breastfeeding with hope and optimism, only to encounter systemic barriers that make sustaining it difficult.
It is well documented that breast milk offers unparalleled benefits—nourishing infants and protecting them against infections, obesity, asthma, diabetes and SIDS—while also reducing risks of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and breast or ovarian cancers in birthing parents. These health dividends extend far beyond the early months.
Without supportive hospital policies, employer accommodations, lactation consultants and accessible community resources, many families struggle to meet their feeding goals. National Breastfeeding Week is an opportunity to spotlight these gaps and encourage supportive solutions—paid family leave, breast‑pump friendly workplaces, and inclusive education for breastfeeding families.
