What to Expect During Your Pelvic Physical Therapy Evaluation

Going to any new healthcare provider for the first time can be daunting. Here at Body Harmony PT we want you to feel comfortable and prepared for your first visit with us! Whether you were referred to pelvic PT by your doctor, recommended by a friend or simply heard about pelvic PT online.

Here are a few things to expect at your initial pelvic health evaluation…

First:

Your PT will begin with a thorough history intake. You will spend the first portion of the session talking about your condition with your therapist. Your therapist may ask additional questions to understand the full scope of your condition.

This may include questions about

  • how your pain started
  • pain levels
  • similar incidents in the past
  • your diet
  • sleep patterns
  • sexual activity
  • typical bowel or bladder habits

What’s next?

Based on your symptoms that you’ve explained in the intake form, your therapist may discuss the benefits of an external and/or internal exam.

An external exam may include evaluating your posture, range of motion, strength, balance and even your breathing mechanics.

Prior to an internal exam your therapist will explain why and how we perform an internal exam. They will then step out of the room to allow you to change.

Body Harmony Physical Therapy will provide you with your own robe. The therapist will also use sheets to cover/provide modesty during the internal examination if it is warranted.

But wait, what is an internal exam?

An internal exam is the best way to assess and treat the pelvic floor muscles. It helps the therapist determine if the muscles are too tight or too weak as well as test the strength and endurance of these muscles. Your therapist may perform an internal exam vaginally or rectally depending on your current symptoms. It is important to note that an internal exam is always optional. Our therapists will always respect your comfort levels and find the appropriate strategies to help you with or without an internal exam.

Ok, so that’s it?

Finally, once your therapist has completed the “exam” portion of the evaluation they will discuss the findings with you and create the best treatment plan for you. They may recommend certain stretches or exercises and discuss what your frequency or duration of treatment may be.

Body Harmony Physical Therapy offers one-on-one treatment sessions and provides individualized treatment programs for each patient.
